ONE RECKLESS YEAR 

Ever since I have been playin’, I’ve been hearin’,  “You’ve  gotta  do somethin’ more practical than singin’. That sounds like fun, but it’s just a dream.” Well I don’t need any encouragment to get there and when I do I’ll send you postcards as reminders. We were the ones who challenged you. We were the ones and now we’re four stories in the sky and I’ve never felt more alive, atop this concrete high rise, cause we own this small town tonight. Pad locks and warning signs couldn’t keep our ambitions at bay tonight. The whole world is in our eyes, cause  we own this small town tonight. 21st St. tried to shut us down. Those kids went crazy when they heard the sound. So we took the party to the other side of town, to 7th St. where the kids are always down. Stand up to those who try to challenge you. No matter where the beat goes, our hearts will never leave home. We are vagabonds together. We’ll be thick as thieves forever. One reckless year.

OUT OF CONTROL 

Friends. Under the influence and out of control, we’ve got all our friends, they’re on their way to the show, and we’ve got one night to make this happen. Tonight it all comes crashing but don’t tell us what we already know, that we are obviously out of control. And you’ve been warning us for years, but your words, they never resonate in our ears. Making mistakes is all we know so just let it go. Cause in our lives the status quo consists of bein’ reckless and bringin’ on the party in spite of those who try to stop it. We will settle down when we’re buried in the ground. 

SECOND STAR TO THE RIGHT 

Take it back. Take it back, what you said about the empty life that you’ve lead. I know you say you can’t handle it but one day you’re gonna have to get, get over it. Think back to when you were only eight years old. You were certain one day you’d sail the oceans in search of gold. Well whatever happened to being a captain on a pirate ship, watching the shoreline fade, using the stars to guide the way. So sail away. And when you see those same stars do you ask yourself where you are? It’s not too late to seize the day. Just get in your car and drive away. Well you’ve heard it before, but not clear enough it seems, so I’ll get to the point, removing all the metaphors and similes. If you can hear me singin’, then you’re alive and breathin’. You haven’t got a reason not to change the life you’re leadin’. So tell me what is stopping you from doing all the things you want to do? So deal with it. Get off your ass and make something happen. We take what we want, when we want it. That’s how we make it happen. 

TODAY IS GONNA BE DIFFERENT 

I’m sick of feelin’ like I‘m lost, like everyone around me has the answers but no one here has ever spoken up. I’m sick of feelin’ like the world is crumbling around me and I’m just watchin’. From now on it’s motivation, cause today is gonna be different. Now I know nothing is permanent. This will open your eyes to find the beauty in the drive home. We’ve got all night to find some trouble and forget our futures. It’s taking some time to let go of the hopelessness we’ve known. But it’s easier to breathe when you can see opportunity. The sun has risen now. We’ve got to conquer somehow. Through trials and disease, a common goal is conceived. So just give it up. Let the pain subside and open your eyes. I woke up today with a feeling that I can’t explain but it felt like love. It was glowing over all of us. Today, I change.

WHAT GOES AROUND

I’m not ten years old and fighting playground battles anymore, but if you push your luck, you’re gonna get more than you bargained for. Why must it come to this? Now I see you’ve got your crew, they’re full of liquid courage too, but in the end I could care less cause I’ve got nothin to prove to you. So take me in this alley tonight with you’re boys by your side. But one day ou’ll be down on your luck, all alone, and I’ll be there to fuck you up. Why do you feel the need to prey upon the weak? You are not respected for showcasing your insecurites. 

THE THOUGHT ALONE 

It kills me every time you go and now I walk down 6th St. alone and wondering where you are and how I wandered off so far. Timing got the best of us but I’m to blame for falling from the start. You’re better off without me cause I wanted to change the world, but it’s claiming my sanity. When I return I’ll be a better man for finding who I am, but I know exactly what I’m doin’. I know exactly what I’m losin’. I’ll never forget you in that polka dotted swimsuit, rising out of the lake. It was classic the way we were that day. The thought alone makes me feel at home. It’s an ice pack on a heartache but it burns like a mistake. I hate how we both have to feel this way but please believe me when I say, I know exactly what I’m doin’. When I return I’ll be a better man for finding who I am but by then you’ll be holding someone else’s hand. Let go. Control. The ending will be the happiest I know. 

STAYING UP 

We’ve got this fire to give us light. We’ve got our friends by our sides. And we’ve got nothin’ on our minds. We’re just losin’ sleep to watch the stars in this Texas sky. Cause these are the nights that define our lives and it’s no surprise I feel like everything’s alright. We’ll let this fire burn all night. We’re stayin’ up just to laugh at our lives. Before we know it the sun will rise and we’ll face that Texas sky with a fire in our eyes. This fire burns within our hearts. A common love that never parts. And every day the sun will rise and we’ll face that burnt orange sky with a fire in our eyes. 

SLO-MOTION 

Everything moves in slo-motion when you enter the room and all my synapses are goin’ crazy for you and my only focus is the next time I’ll taste your lips and all the things I’ll do when I finally get you alone in your room. Guided by the moonlight that’s sneaking through your window, your breathing on my neck will set the evening’s tempo. Entangled in your hair, I’ve caught that lover’s stare. It’s the only one that ever got me there. So get me there. So let’s get that skirt down off your thighs. That’s been the only thing on my mind since you whispered in my ear, “This party sucks, let’s get the hell out of here.” Hair like fire, eyes like oceans. You haven’t got the slightest clue what your’e doin’ to me. 

NEVER STOP WRITING 

When you told me you were leaving, I was thinking, “I’d better get myself out now, because this girl is too amazing to be losing. I know I’ll never live that down.” And that’s why I’ll never stop writing. Because now we’re oceans apart and I can feel your beating heart and I’ve been thinkin’ more and more that this is something worth fighting for. Well I may be young and stupid, but I’ve learned that fighting’s foolish, because girl when I really feel you it overwhelms my soul, I’m useless. I’d lost all faith in feeling the way that I do now, until that night I met you when my world got turned upside down. For months now we’ve dealt with this loneliness and I know that it’d be smart to put an end to this, but I’m young and stupid with nothing to hide and I’ll do anything to keep this alive. And that’s why I’ll never stop writing these letters as long as you’re reading them. 

PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARE A PLAGUE

People like you are nothing but a plague. You will never stand in our way. This ends today. It makes me sick to know that I believed every lie you ever fed to me. But now I’ve got you figured out. I’ll use this song tonight to call you out. Your glowing eyes are only a disguise that you use to make the hopeless ones comply. People like you are nothing but a plague that the compassionate will save. You will never stand in our way. You said that we were friends and I meant every word I said, but I guess loyalty is dead. Because what you did with him was impossible to comprehend. You are not immune to consequence. Here’s your forgiveness, but I’ll never forget this. The best day of my life, I realized I would be happier alone. The sickness grows. So grow up. 

AN OPEN ROAD WITH AN OPEN END 

I was only 17 the summer that I learned I don’t know everything. In fact, I know nothing. But that’s alright, cause I’ve got time. I’m only pushing 23 and just as happy as can be to be here tonight. Late nights and goodbyes. New days and lost ties. Old friends and promises. An open road with an open end. No time for hesitation. We’ll manifest our destination. A moment lost is a moment wasted. I’m too alive to remain complacent. And I’m leaving with something to prove cause I’ve nothing to lose. I don’t know who I am or what I want or where I want to be but that’s happiness to me. I’m slowly learning that fulfillment doesn’t come from what I’ve done, but how far I’ve come. If destiny betrays us, our strength alone will save us. 

ALL I NEED

I’m on a plane towards the city lights with nothing but my memories to keep me company tonight. I packed my bags and told myself “You’re not coming home until you find a way to feel alive.” Cause I’m done takin’ for granted the life I’ve been handed and everything I’ve ever learned about losing your grip when things just don’t happen the way that we plan them. So just give it up. At the center of the modern world, anything I could ever want was there for me to have. And destiny can have my past but when it comes to my future, well, I’m taking that one back. And I’m singin’. I’d lost my mind in my own self doubt until I found, that these two things are all I need:  the love I bleed and the air I breathe.

WILD FRONTIER FEST

is this coming weekend at the historic Emo’s in Austin, TX. We’ll be playing on Sunday around 6 right after our good friends in For Hours and Ours. Tickets for the entire weekend festival (over 40 bands) are $35 or $20 per day.

We couldn’t be more excited about playing on The Black Stage at Fun Fun Fun Fest this year! We’re the first band on Saturday. Other bands playing that day are Touche Amore, The Damned, Cave In, Paint It Black, Shapes Have Fangs, and many many more.

We’re currently writing our follow up to Just Give It Up. The songs are coming along really well and we have more ideas than we know what to do with right now. We’re hoping to release the new EP in the winter or spring.

The Squid Life Tour
